How do you develop my film?

Once you send your film to us, we perform a number of steps to ensure we get the best results. The first step is checking the order against what you sent us. Next is getting the film ready ready for processing. This needs to happen in the dark (but we've eaten a lot of carrots). Your film is loaded onto development reels which fit in a light sealed tank. At Chemical Dependency Lab, we rotary process all film, meaning your drums are loaded into a temperature controlled bath, and rotationally agitated as the relevant chemicals are loaded/unloaded according to the process. Once all of the chemical steps have been completed, your film is dried, then taken to our scanning rig. From here, we carefully photograph, convert and lightly edit your photos to get the best colours from your negatives. We then zip all of these images up for you and send you a secure link for you to download files. Finally, we send your negatives back to you - always. We believe a negative is for life, not just for Christmas.

How long does it take?

We aim to get your scans back to you within 3 working days of receiving your film. However that's not a promise, sometimes we can get them to you same day, sometimes it may take around 7 days.

Do you offer a rush service?

We don't rush, we take our time ensuring the highest quality. If you have a tight timeframe for a deadline, add it to the order notes and we will try our hardest to get your scans back for the date.

How do I get my scans?

When your scans are ready, you will be emailed a download link. This link will serve you a zip file containing just JPEG, or JPEG and TIFF images in subdirectories.

The link in the email is valid for 7 days from the time it is sent, you can download your images as many times as you need during that time. If the link expires before you are able to download your scans, fear not! Simply email us or use the contact us form to let us know you need a new download link. We keep your scans for 90 days from the day your order was fulfilled and can regenerate links for you until they are erased.

How big are the scans?

We digital camera scanning to process all rolls. This provides the absolute highest quality and allows us to capture a ton of detail in your negatives.

35mm JPEG scans are approximately 3500x5200 - Around ~ 4.5 - 7MB. See an example here.

35mm TIFF 8bit files are ~ 54MB

If you order JPEG and TIFF scans for a 36 exposure roll of 35mm film, expect a zip file of around 2GB.

120 6x6 JPEG scans are approximately 3900x3900 - Between ~ 2 - 3MB. See an example here.

120 6x6 TIFF 8bit files are ~ 45MB.

We default to providing 8bit TIFF images. We can deliver 16bit if you need, just let us know in the order notes. But beware, they're chunky files!

How long do you keep my scans for?

We keep scans for 90 days before they are permanently deleted. So make sure you have them downloaded and backed up before the clock runs out.

Do you make prints?

Let's be honest, you're posting these to instagram. Currently we don't offer prints, but that doesn't stop you sending your scan files off to get your beautiful shots bound in an annual with folks that really know their papers and ink.

Do you send my negatives back?

Yes. Always. The postage fee when ordering covers the return of your negatives.

Do you process souped film?

Yep, send it our way. But make sure you let us know in the order notes as we need to process it seperately.

We don't mind you getting funky with your fix, we cater for most.

Can you develop APS?

Nope, just 35mm and 120 medium format. We don't develop disc film either, but if you have some, get in touch...
