If you shoot film in Essex, here's a fact worth knowing: most places that offer film developing on the high street don't develop anything. Your roll goes in a courier bag to a big lab, usually in London, and comes back a week or two later with a markup attached. Chemical Dependency Lab is the other kind of lab. We're an analogue minilab in Manningtree, on the Essex–Suffolk border, and every roll we take in is developed and scanned right here, in-house, by people who shoot film themselves.
Film Developing Near You — Without Leaving the House
Whether you're in Colchester, Chelmsford, Ipswich, Braintree, Clacton, Harwich or anywhere in between, your film's journey to us is a padded envelope and a first-class stamp. You skip the parking, the queue, and the shop counter that was only ever going to post your film on to somebody else. Order online, post your rolls, and your scans arrive in your own private online gallery. We aim to have them there within 3 working days of your film landing on our mat.
What We Develop
- 35mm film — C-41 colour and black & white, disposable cameras included. Developing from £6, developing and scanning from £10.
- 120 medium format — same processes, same prices as 35mm.
- Half-frame film — all 72 frames scanned individually. Pentax 17 owners, you're among friends.
We don't process E6 slide film; it's C-41 and black & white only. Already-developed film (including slides) can go through our negative scanning service from £4 a roll.

Every develop-and-scan order includes 61-megapixel camera scans delivered to your own gallery at loupe.chemicaldependency.co.uk, where you choose your downloads for a full year, from social-ready JPEGs to archive-quality 16-bit TIFFs. Frames worth more than a screen can be ordered as dye-sublimation prints straight from the gallery. And your negatives always come home: sleeved, protected, returned in the post.
In-House Developing vs Sent-Away Developing
Why does in-house matter? Fewer hands on your film, fewer days in courier bags, and answers from the people who actually ran your roll through the chemistry. If a shot needs a rescan or a frame needs a closer look, you're talking to the person holding the negative, not a shop assistant relaying messages to a lab off Brick Lane.

Manningtree sits on the main line about an hour from London Liverpool Street, which makes us a handy postal lab for London film shooters too. Your film commutes out of the city so you don't have to trek across it. And since the Royal Mail doesn't care about county lines, film from Norwich, Cambridge or anywhere else in the UK gets exactly the same treatment.

We're a postal lab at the moment, so everything comes in and goes out through the post. It keeps prices down and works exactly the same whether you're one town over or three counties away.
How long does it take?
We aim to have your film developed, scanned and in your gallery within 3 working days of it arriving. We email you the moment your scans are ready.
Do you develop disposable cameras?
Yes. Post us the whole camera and we'll do the rest.
