We develop and scan 35mm, half-frame and 120 medium format film in C-41 colour and black & white, in-house at our Essex lab, for film posted from anywhere in the UK. Developing starts at £6 a roll, developing and scanning at £10, and every frame gets treated like it's our own masterpiece (or happy accident, we don't judge).

3. We Develop and Scan Your film is developed in-house, in small batches, with the same obsessive attention we'd give our own. Because in our hearts, it kind of is ours now. We aim to have your film developed, scanned and in your gallery within 3 working days of it landing on our mat, and we'll email you the moment your scans are ready.
4. View and Download Your Scans Scans land in your own private gallery at loupe.chemicaldependency.co.uk. Choose the files you want, from social-sized JPEGs to full archive-quality 16-bit TIFFs. Your images stay in Loupe for a year, downloadable as often as you like.
5. Order Prints, If You Want Them Every gallery can order dye-sublimation prints from its scans. Tick the frames worth printing, pick 4x6 inch or 6x8 inch and one of four finishes, and we'll print them. Continuous tone, with no dot structure for a loupe to find. Entirely optional. 6. Get Your Negs Back All negatives are returned in the post: sleeved, safe, and ready for that special storage place you'll definitely remember. (You won't. We believe in you anyway.)
The bread and butter of any habit. We develop every 35mm C-41 colour stock, from Kodak Gold to the strange aerial-surveillance stuff we sell, and true black & white films in standard chemistry, in-house. Disposable cameras are very welcome: crack one open at a wedding, post it to us, relive the questionable decisions in 61 megapixels.
Shooting a Hasselblad, a Mamiya, a Holga held together with tape? We develop 120 medium format in C-41 and black & white at the same price as 35mm, because a bigger negative shouldn't mean a bigger invoice.
Pentax 17 owners, Kodak Ektar H35 devotees, Olympus Pen archaeologists: we see you, all 72 frames of you. Half-frame rolls are developed and scanned frame by frame. Every single one, not a contact-sheet fudge. Very few UK labs even mention half frame; we built it into the price list.
Every scan is made on a 61-megapixel camera setup and delivered to your own private Loupe gallery, rather than a WeTransfer link that expires while you're on holiday. You choose your download format per frame (JPEG for the group chat, 16-bit TIFF for the archive), and your gallery stays live for 12 months. When a frame turns out to be worth more than a screen, order it as a print without leaving the gallery.
Some labs quietly bin negatives after scanning. We think that's sacrilege. Every roll is sleeved and returned in the post, because the negative is the photograph. The scan is just its best impression so far.
Chemical Dependency Lab is a small analogue minilab in Manningtree, Essex: about an hour from London Liverpool Street, on the Suffolk border, and a first-class stamp from everywhere else. Your film is developed here, by us, in-house. It is not couriered to a bigger lab in London while a shop takes a margin, which happens more often than you'd think. We aim to get your scans back within 3 working days of your film arriving. That's an aim, not a promise: sometimes it's same day, occasionally it stretches to around 7. We'll email you the moment your scans are ready.
Pack your rolls (canisters or backing paper on, padded envelope around them), include your order number and name, and post them to Chemical Dependency Lab, PO Box 13648, Manningtree, CO11 9BL. We recommend Royal Mail Tracked; it's cheap peace of mind for irreplaceable rolls.
First we check your order against what arrived. Then your film is loaded onto development reels in the dark (we've eaten a lot of carrots) and into a light-sealed tank. We rotary process all film: your tank sits in a temperature-controlled bath and is rotationally agitated while the chemistry does its work. Once developed, your film is dried and taken for scanning, where we photograph, convert and lightly edit every frame to get the best out of your negatives. Scans land in your Loupe gallery, and your negatives come back in the post. Always. A negative is for life, not just for Christmas.
We don't rush; we take our time ensuring the highest quality. If you're up against a deadline, add it to your order notes and we'll try our hardest to get your scans back in time.
When your scans are ready you'll get an email with a link to loupe.chemicaldependency.co.uk, our delivery system. Loupe shows all your orders and lets you download your scans the way you want them: social-media-sized JPEG, print-quality JPEG or full-size uncompressed TIFF. Stuck? Email us and we'll happily help.
We camera-scan every roll on a 61-megapixel setup, which captures a frankly absurd amount of detail. 35mm JPEGs come out around 8600x5700 pixels (7–10MB each); 35mm 16-bit TIFFs are around 270MB per frame. 120 6x6 JPEGs are around 6240x6240 (6–9MB); TIFFs around 195MB. Order JPEG and TIFF for a 36-exposure roll and you're downloading roughly 9GB of your own genius.
A year in Loupe, then they're permanently deleted. Download them and back them up before the clock runs out.
Yes. Every Loupe gallery can order dye-sublimation prints straight from its scans: 4x6 inch or 6x8 inch, four finishes, continuous tone with no dot structure for a loupe to find. Here's how prints work.
Yes. Always. The postage fee when ordering covers the return of your negatives.
Absolutely. Select 35mm C-41 and post us the whole camera. We'll take it from there.
Yes. True black & white films are processed in-house in proper B&W chemistry, not squeezed through the colour machine.
No. We process C-41 colour negative and black & white only. (Ilford XP2 counts as C-41, so that's fine.) If your slides are already developed, our scanning service will happily digitise them.
Yes. Expired film comes through the lab all the time. Expect extra grain and character depending on how it was stored; that's half the fun.
Yep, send it our way. Just make sure you tell us in the order notes, because it needs processing separately. We don't mind you getting funky with your fix; we cater for most.
Nope. 35mm (including half frame) and 120 medium format only. We don't develop disc film either, but if you have some, get in touch...
