Candido 400 - 35mm Colour Negative Film
Kodak Vision3 250D daylight cinema film, rated at 400 and ready for any C-41 lab.
The easy one of the four: daylight balanced, soft in contrast, and happy to be pointed at almost anything under the sun.
Candido 400 35mm Film is an ISO 400 daylight balanced colour negative film based on Kodak Vision3 250D motion picture stock, with the remjet backing removed so it develops in standard C-41. Smooth contrast, restrained saturation, fairly fine grain for its speed and halation around bright highlights. DX coded, 36 exposures.
What Makes Candido 400 Habit-Forming
Kodak Cinema Film
Vision3 250D is Kodak's daylight motion picture stock. It normally carries a black remjet backing that photo labs cannot process, and Candido removes it before spooling, so this goes to any C-41 lab like any other colour film.
The CineStill 400D Comparison
Reviewers keep reaching for the same reference point. Blue Moon Camera's review found that Candido 400 looks very like CineStill 400D, with smooth contrast, low saturation and fairly fine grain for the speed, and called it a very versatile film for almost any daytime outdoor scene.
Soft, Not Punchy
This is a gentle, cinematic palette rather than a saturated consumer one. Skin, skies and foliage come out restrained and natural. If you want colours that shout, this is the wrong film, and Candido 800 or a Kodak consumer stock will suit you better.
Daylight Means Daylight
Candido 400 is balanced for daylight and electronic flash. Under household bulbs, candles or warm venue lighting it will render everything orange, as any daylight film does. For warm-lit interiors and evenings, the tungsten Candido 200 and Candido 800 are the right choices.
Rated Above Kodak's Speed
Kodak rates Vision3 250D at 250, so Candido 400 is rated about two-thirds of a stop faster than the cinema stock it comes from. Colour negative forgives overexposure far more readily than underexposure, so when the light allows, give it a little more rather than less.
Halation in Bright Light
With the remjet gone, strong highlights and reflections can pick up a reddish glow. In daylight it shows most around specular highlights and backlit scenes.

Is Candido 400 the same as CineStill 400D?
They come from different companies, but they work the same way: daylight Kodak cinema film with the remjet removed for C-41. Candido 400 is based on Vision3 250D, and reviewers have found its look very close to CineStill 400D, with smooth contrast, low saturation and fairly fine grain for the speed.
Can you use Candido 400 indoors?
With flash or window light, yes. It is daylight balanced, so under household bulbs or warm venue lighting it renders orange. For interiors lit by lamps, candles or tungsten, the tungsten-balanced Candido 200 or 800 will give far more natural colour.
Best For Daytime outdoor shooting of almost any kind: travel, street, beaches, portraits in open shade and landscapes, for photographers who want the soft cinema look without thinking about colour balance. Once you have shot it, send it our way. We develop, scan and print C-41 in house.
Perfect for: CineStill 400D shooters looking for an alternative, people who find consumer colour film too saturated, travellers who want one daylight film for the whole trip, and anyone whose dependency has developed a taste for cinema.
Candido's founder, Harry Bell, has said he wants photographers to pay for flights rather than film. Candido 400 is probably the film that ambition suits best: a soft, forgiving daylight cinema stock that will cover most of a holiday without complaint.
