A loupe is the little magnifier you press to your eye over a light table, the one that lets you get properly close to a frame and decide whether it lives or dies. It is the most honest tool in the darkroom. So when we built a new home for your developed scans, there was only ever one thing to call it.
Loupe is the new way we deliver your scans, and it lives at loupe.chemicaldependency.co.uk. No more download links buried six emails deep. No more transfer links that quietly expire the week before you remember you wanted them. Just your scans, sat waiting, ready whenever you are.
Here is how it works.
See your orders the moment they land
When your film comes off the scanner, your order appears in Loupe. Log in and every job you have sent us is right there, newest at the top, each one labelled with its order number so you always know which roll you are looking at. The shots you forgot you took, the ones you were nervous about, the frame you already knew was the keeper. All of it, in one place, no hunting required.
Pick the frames you actually want
Open an order and your scans are laid out as a grid, every frame from the roll ready to inspect. Tap through them, zoom in, and have a proper look. This is the bit the name is about: getting close enough to see the grain and decide for yourself.
Select what you want. Choose a single hero frame, a handful of favourites, or the whole roll if every shot earned its place. Loupe only downloads what you tell it to, so you are never wrestling a giant zip of thirty-six frames when you only wanted the one of the dog.
Choose your size
Not every scan needs to be a print-ready monster, and not every scan should be a thumbnail. So Loupe gives you three formats, and you pick whichever suits the job.
Social JPEG is the quick one, a compressed file kept under 2MB and sized for Instagram, your website, or firing off to a friend who needs proof you finally finished that roll.
Print quality JPEG is the everyday workhorse, full resolution and ready to send to a printer or sit happily in your library without falling apart at 100 percent.
And full size 16-bit TIFF is the proper archive file, the uncompressed original with every bit of tonal information we pulled off the scanner, for when you want maximum room to edit or a print you will still be happy with in ten years. Pick the format that matches the job, frame by frame if you like.
A full year, downloaded as often as you like
Here is the part we are quietly proud of. Your scans stay in Loupe for a full year from the day they are delivered. Twelve months to come back, change your mind, and grab the frame you walked past the first time.
And you can download them as many times as you need. Lost the file when your laptop died? Download it again. Want the web version today and the full resolution one next month when you finally sort out a print? Help yourself. There is no limit, no countdown, and no link to lose. The scans are yours, and Loupe simply keeps them safe and within reach for the year.
Already developed elsewhere? We still want your negatives
Loupe is the front end, but the scans behind it are the real point, and a scan is only ever as good as the eye that made it. If you have a drawer of developed negatives that have never been properly digitised, the ones you keep meaning to get to, send them our way.
